Overview

A directory where every problem ships with a blueprint

Planetary Pulse maps fourteen global systemic shortfalls and pairs each one with two buildable paths: macro infrastructure that requires regional coordination, and DIY actions a single person can construct with accessible tools.

Most global-issue dashboards end at the number. Planetary Pulse treats the number as the entry point. Each of its fourteen action channels — water toxicity, electricity access, digital isolation, sanitation gaps, soil desertification, pollinator collapse and the rest — carries its authoritative source index, its impact scale, and the tier of human need it sits on.

The organising idea, stated on the site as the Sovereign Thesis, is that communities locked in daily survival struggles have their cognitive capacity suppressed. Open-sourcing the decentralized systems that guarantee water, energy, and shelter does not just fix those layers; it frees human effort to migrate upward toward knowledge, community, and finally planetary stewardship. The whole interface is built on that five-tier stack, from physiological baselines up to celestial actualization.

Open a channel and the directory stops summarising and starts specifying. Structural options are ranked by impact and cost out of ten, then broken into resource outlays, the coordination threshold required, a three-phase tactical deployment, and the allied cooperatives already working that problem. A generative tailoring step rewrites any blueprint for a specific district, and a public witness layer lets residents, engineers, and clinical researchers validate or refine what is proposed.

The Problem

Awareness without a next step

01

Global indicators end at the statistic

The world is well supplied with dashboards saying 2.2 billion people lack safe water and 2.6 billion are offline. Almost none of them tell a reader what could be built about it, at what cost, or by whom.

02

Solutions live at only one scale

Institutional plans assume a ministry and a nine-figure budget. Grassroots guides assume a backyard. A person willing to help has no way to see both scales of the same problem side by side and pick the one they can actually reach.

03

Working blueprints stay siloed

Gravity filtration, TVWS frequency sharing, solar-still distillation, LFP battery grids and farmer-managed regeneration all work. They sit in separate NGO archives, papers, and forums, with no shared registry connecting them to the shortfall they answer.

04

The blockers are structural, not technical

Corporate medical patents lock essential syntheses away from local production, and national utilities ban peer-to-peer neighbourhood grids to preserve ratepayer dominance. A directory that ignores those barriers sends builders into walls it never named.

The Approach

How we built it

01

Build on a hierarchy of need

The five strata run from physiological baselines through safety, belonging, and knowledge up to sovereign actualization. Every channel is filed against one of them, so the interface always shows what a fix unlocks rather than only what it repairs.

02

One registry, fourteen channels

Each channel names its system domain, its source index — WHO JMP, IEA, ITU, UNEP, FAO, WRI, IPBES, UN SDG targets — and its impact scale, so a reader can trace any figure back to the body that publishes it.

03

Two paths per problem, always

Every blueprint splits into Macro Systems and Micro DIY Actions. The same water channel offers municipal chemical-adsorption infrastructure with satellite-linked testing telemetry and a solar-still distillation field a community can build itself.

04

Rank by impact against cost

Options carry explicit impact and cost scores out of ten and a rank, so a group choosing between two viable systems can see the trade rather than guess at it.

05

Phase the deployment

Each strategy blueprint states its resource outlay, the coordination threshold it demands, and a three-phase tactical rollout, which turns an approved idea into a sequence someone can start on Monday.

06

Wire live telemetry to real indicators

The vitality readouts compute from World Bank aggregates by indicator code — safe water at 73.7%, grid access at 91.9%, forest canopy at 31.1% against a 35% target — so the directory's baseline moves with the published data rather than a hand-set figure.

07

Let the public witness the plan

Readers vote a blueprint valid or in need of refinement and post signed notes under a declared role, so field experience from an engineer or a local resident lands next to the specification instead of somewhere else entirely.

What It Does

Capabilities

Fourteen systemic action channels

A sortable registry spanning healthcare deserts, carbon intensity, education, water toxicity, slum thermal hazards, capital exclusion, electricity, connectivity, air pollution, marine plastic, desertification, sanitation, deforestation, hunger, and pollinator collapse.

Dual-scale blueprints

Every channel opens into both macro infrastructure requiring regional coordination and micro DIY actions buildable by one person with accessible tools.

Impact and cost ranking

Structural options are scored out of ten on impact and cost and given an explicit rank, making the trade-off between two workable systems visible.

Three-phase tactical deployment

Each strategy states resource outlay, coordination threshold, and a phased rollout — filtration stations, then online sensors, then clean ground sourcing.

Live planetary telemetry

System readiness bars computed from World Bank indicator codes for safe water, grid access, economic sovereignty, literacy, and forest canopy.

Hierarchy-of-need navigation

A five-tier stack from physiological baselines to celestial actualization, with each tier tappable to inspect the solution blueprints filed beneath it.

Tailored blueprint generation

A generative step that rewrites any blueprint into a custom roadmap for a named district and its local conditions.

Public witness validation

Vote a blueprint valid or in need of refinement, and post a signed field note under a declared role such as local resident, systems engineer, or clinical researcher.

Cooperative support hub

Direct routing from a blueprint to the organisations already executing it, including Water.org, Evidence Action, Partners In Health, and Guifi.net.

Design System

The visual language

Planetary Pulse is dressed as a live ledger rather than a campaign site. A deep slate field carries dense tabular data without fatigue, a single emerald marks anything currently live or verified, and violet is held back for the highest stratum so the hierarchy is legible by colour alone.

02

Typography

Display

System grotesque

Sets the headline and stratum labels in tight uppercase, giving the directory its ledger-terminal register.

Interface

System sans stack

Carries the registry table, blueprint bodies, and witness notes at reading sizes across long scroll depths.

Data

Tabular figures

Readiness percentages, impact and cost scores, indicator codes, and affected-population counts, kept aligned down the column.

03

Principles

  • 01

    No problem without a path

A shortfall never appears on its own. Every entry in the registry is joined to at least one macro system and one DIY action, so reading the directory never dead-ends in despair.

  • 02

    Cite the index, always

Each figure carries the body that publishes it. Attribution on the row itself is what separates a working registry from an infographic.

  • 03

    Colour encodes the stratum

Emerald for what is live and verified, violet for the actualization tier. Palette does hierarchy work so the table needs fewer labels.

  • 04

    The public is a reviewer

Witness votes and signed field notes sit inside the blueprint rather than in a comment section, treating practitioner experience as part of the specification.

FAQ

Questions

Planetary Pulse is an open directory of global systemic shortfalls. Each of its fourteen channels pairs an authoritative indicator with buildable answers at two scales: macro infrastructure requiring regional coordination, and DIY actions any individual can construct.

Each channel names its source index — the WHO JMP metric, WHO Universal Health Coverage Index, IEA global access gap, ITU connectivity index, UNEP assessments, FAO and WRI indicators, IPBES extinction threat, and UN SDG targets. The live readiness bars compute from World Bank aggregates by indicator code.

The argument that communities locked in daily survival struggles have their cognitive capacity suppressed. Open-sourcing decentralized systems that guarantee water, energy, and shelter secures those baselines permanently and frees human effort to migrate toward planetary stewardship.

Ranked structural options with impact and cost scores out of ten, the resource outlay and coordination threshold each demands, a three-phase tactical deployment, and the allied cooperatives already working on that problem.

Yes. Any blueprint can be tailored into a custom roadmap for a specific district, generating a plan against local conditions rather than the generic case.

Readers vote whether a blueprint is viable or needs refinement and post signed witness notes under a declared role, so field experience from engineers, residents, and researchers sits directly alongside the specification.
